Mrs. Mabel J. Ormond-Upchurch went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday afternoon, June 20, 2016, surrounded by the love and support of her family. She was born on April 18, 1925, in Warsaw, NC, the youngest of five children, to Bertice W. Johnson and Bertha Owen Johnson. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Ora Athens and Elizabeth (Betty) Brooks and two brothers Norwood and Bertice Johnson. Mabel was also preceded in death by her husband Jesse Lee “Bill” Ormond in 1970 and her second husband Kyle Penn Upchurch in 1995. Her son William Lee Ormond passed away in 2008.
Mabel moved to Monroe in 1977 and joined the Mill Creek Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, became a member of the Baptist Women’s Association, and many other committees within the church. She cooked often for those in need and performed many other acts of love and kindness throughout the years. She loved her family and her church family and was at her happiest when she was contributing to the needs of both. All who knew Mabel will remember her smile, her great attitude and fun loving nature.
Mabel is survived by her daughter Toni M. Ormond of Monroe, NC and her three sons Robert L. Ormond and his wife Terri and Richard L. Ormond and his wife Darlene from Myrtle Beach, SC, and Vernon C. Additionally Mabel had many nieces and nephews and she stayed in touch with them often. All will miss her birthday cards that never failed to show up in our mailboxes “on time”.
