Mrs. Gladys Baucom Helms, age 81, of Monroe, NC, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018 at McWhorter Hospice House of Union County.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Gladys will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, December 13, 2018 at West Monroe Baptist Church, 1212 Icemorlee Street, Monroe, NC, 28112, officiated by Rev. Sam Phipps and Rev. Eric Nixon. Interment will follow in the Lakeland Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 PM at West Monroe Baptist Church, prior to the service.
Gladys was born February 28, 1937 in Mecklenburg County, NC, a daughter of the late Fred Baucom and Mae Philemon Baucom. Gladys was not only a kind and caring mother to her children, but to the children of many others as she devoted her time and resources to childcare throughout her life. A woman who loved the Lord and her family, Gladys always took the time to stay involved with her church and her loved ones. An avid gardener, Gladys enjoyed spending time in her garden and canning all she had grown to share with others. Described as a loving mother that loved her children and grandchildren, Gladys will be greatly missed and warmly remembered by her family.
Gladys is survived by a son, Fred Helms of Monroe, NC, a son, Alan Helms and wife Ruth of Florida, her daughter, close friend, and caregiver Teresa Price and husband Johnny of Matthews, NC, a brother, Donald Baucom of High Rock, NC, a sister, Gloria Brandon and husband Bob of Charlotte, NC, a granddaughter, Amanda Pethel and husband Brian Pethel of Locust, NC, a grandson, Caleb Furr of Monroe, NC, a grandson, Thomas Helms and wife Rebecca of Camp Lejune, NC, a granddaughter, Sarah Helms of Rockingham, NC, and a great-granddaughter Brooklyn Pethel of Locust, NC.
In addition to her parents, Gladys was preceded in death and reunited in eternal life with her husband of 61 years, Ronnie Kenneth Helms. She was also reunited with her daughter, Penny Helms, her grandson, Travis Furr, and her three sisters; Mary Paton, Nancy Wylie, and Joyce Smith.
