Mrs. Helen Jean Gross Hancock, age 89, of Marshville, NC, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018 at Olive Branch Family Care Home in Marshville, NC.
A Celebration of Life for Mrs. Hancock will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at in the Chapel of Central United Methodist Church, 801 S. Hayne Street, Monroe, 28112, officiated by Reverend Laura Hamrick. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, 28212.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at 10 AM, in the Central Hall of Central United Methodist Church.
Helen was born December 4, 1928 in Lillybrook, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Noah Franklin Gross and Elizabeth Drewek. Fondly remembered as a master gardener and avid traveller, Helen was also a career educator. Mrs. Hancock earned her Master's Degree in education, and went on to teach for the Union County and Mecklenburg County school system. She was passionate about giving back to her community through volunteer work and gave her time and resources to Backpacks for Education, and to the Union County Sheriff's Office program S.A.L.T (Seniors And Law Enforcement Together). Mrs. Hancock founded of the Widowed Spouses of North Carolina, an organization designed to support the spouses of deceased ministers. Above all, she was devoted to caring for people, and had extraordinary compassion for anyone in need.
Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Nifong and husband Richard of High Point, NC, a son, O.L. "Buddy" Hancock of Monroe, NC, a son, Franklin Hancock and wife Tanya of Monroe, NC, a daughter, Ruth Gardner and husband Clark of Harrisburg, NC, a daughter, Donna J. Stockwell and husband Jerry of Midland, NC, a sister, Patricia Woodard of Detroit, MI, a brother, Denzel Gross of Detroit, MI. Helen is also survived by 13 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hancock was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Oros Leo Hancock Jr., and two brothers; Frank Gross, and Delmer L. Gross.
