Sonny was born October 11, 1957, in Rowan County, NC, a son of Jacqueline Joines Rogers and the late James Allen "Bud" Rogers Sr. After retiring as a Sergeant from the Monroe Police Department in 1999, Sonny became pastor of Back to Bethel Baptist Church where he gave his heart and soul preaching the love of Jesus Christ. On August 19, 2016, he married his soulmate, Paula Taylor Rogers, and their lives were forever changed. God blessed them both with two of the most precious years a couple could have. Their shared desire was to set an example that true love does exist and you can find complete happiness loving God and each other. Sonny is lovingly remembered by his family for his gracious heart and humble spirit. Often referred to as the gentle giant that he was, he lived a life devoted to sharing with others the love of Jesus.

Sonny is survived by his loving wife and eternal soulmate, Paula Rogers, his mother, Jackie Rogers, two sisters; Elaine Plowman and Sandy Helms, two brothers; Mark Rogers and Matthew "Chip" Rogers, three sons; James Allen Rogers III and wife Kimberly, Chris Rogers, Bryan Rogers and wife Caitlin, two daughters; Tiffany Hicks and husband Brad, Katie Edwards and Jordan Griffin, six grandchildren; Ryann and Dalton, Madison and Cason, and Alexis Cannon and Breana Bost, a mother-in-law; Doris Taylor. Survivors also include numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as his fur babies; Miley, Coco, Riley, Lucy, Buzz, Daisy, Rufus, and Penny.

In addition to his father, Sonny was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law; Lonnie Plowman and Claude Marty Helms, and fur babies Zoee, Zack and Riley

Although flowers are appreciated, the family asks that any Memorial Donations in Sonny's honor be made to Back to Bethel Baptist Church, 3606 Sanford Lane, Monroe, NC, 28110.
