Mrs. Verla Marie Rushing Godfrey Kepple, age 95, went home to be with her heavenly Father on Friday, November 23, 2018 surrounded by her loving family at White Oak Manor of Waxhaw.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Saturday, December 1, 2018 in the Azalea Room of Davis Funeral Service, 1003 East Franklin Street, Monroe, NC, 28112. Following visitation, a Graveside Service for Verla will be held at 2:30 PM, Saturday December 1, 2018 at Lakeland Memorial Park, 1901 Lancaster Ave, Monroe, NC, 28112, officiated by Rev. Phillip Pike.
Verla was born July 1, 1923, in Stanley County, NC, a daughter of the late James Ellis Rushing and Rossie Simpson Rushing of Unionville, NC. Verla spent her childhood years and completed the 10th grade in Unionville. After her childhood, Verla relocated to Charlotte seeking employment, and worked for Hudson Hosiery Hill until 1941, when she married Ray Godfrey. Eventually, Verla went on to work for Package Products, and Belk's department store as an associate. Mrs. Kepple was presented multiple certificates of appreciation for her many years of volunteering for Meals on Wheels, and her dedication for visiting shut-ins. She was also very involved in the Senior Center and enjoyed many annual trips to Wildacres with the senior group. She enjoyed spending time in God's creation, especially when she was gardening her flowers and vegetables. Verla was a master seamstress who enjoyed quilting, crocheting, knitting, and many other crafts. A woman of many talents who is described as a master of anything she ever attempted, Verla even built her own grandfather clock. She also loved gospel music, and cherished attending gospel music events with her friends and family. Verla is warmly remembered and greatly missed by her family, who reflect on one of Verla's favorite scriptures during her passing: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, for any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else, in all creation, will be able to seperate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39
Verla is survived by a daughter, Shirley Godfrey Hutchins Zuber and husband Darrell of Indian Land, SC, a son, Ray Wilson Godfrey Jr. and wife Barbara of Myrtle Beach, SC, two brothers; Arlie Rushing and wife Doris of Unionville, NC, Hoyt Rushing and wife Fay of Unionville, NC. Survivors also include Verla's seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Verla is preceded in death by husbands Ray Wilson Godfrey of Thomasville, NC, "Duffy" Bruns of Charlotte, NC, and Harlan J. Kepple of Monroe, NC, a son, Donald Wayne Godfrey of Lancaster, SC, three sisters; Mildred Kirkland of Charlotte, NC, Mitchell Callendar of Biloxi, MI, and Mary Roughton of Winter Haven, FL, three brothers; Leroy Rushing of Indian Trail, NC, James Rushing of Hickory Grove, NC, and J. W. Rushing of Unionville, NC.
