Mr. Homer Houston "Butch" Cox Jr., age 73, of Union County, NC, passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Atrium Health Cabarrus.  

Services to honor Butch's life will be held at 1:00PM on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Prospect United Methodist Church, 6020 Prospect Road, Monroe, NC, 28112, officiated by Rev. Phil McLean.  Interment with full military honors will immediately follow in the Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 12, 2021 in the H. Vann Davis III Memorial Chapel of Davis Funeral Service, 1003 E. Franklin Street, Monroe, NC, 28112 between 5:00-7:00 PM.

Butch was born on December 31, 1947 in Union County, NC, a son of the late Homer Houston Cox, Sr. and Mollie Louise Davidson Cox. Butch was a Sea Scout as a child, which peaked his interest in the United States Navy. At the age of 21, he served two tours in Vietnam from 1968-1970. He was proud to serve our country and was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon. After being honorably discharged in 1970, he went on to begin a 28 year career as a Diesel Mechanic with Dellinger Inc. Butch loved to hunt, fish, garden and share his love of music through playing guitar, banjo and doghouse bass. After marrying the love of his life in 1977, he became the proud father of 2 two children, Brian and Tammy. Through life's trials and tribulations, Butch and Ellen always maintained that despite anything, they could always walk through it together. Butch was an avid member of his church family and community. Always ensuring his family went to church to celebrate in the glory of his Lord and Savior and volunteering his time to spread love with all those around him. He was a protective husband, father, and brother whose memory will live on through all who encountered him. 

Those left to carry on Butch’s memory include his wife of 44 years, Mrs. Minnie Ellen Cox; his daughter, Tammy Cox Helms; his granddaughter Britt’ny Helms; his granddaughter, Erika Helms; his brother, Richard G. Cox (Sue); his sister, Kathern “Kathy” Aldridge (Donnie); his sister-in-law, Ora Lee Melton; his brother-in-law, Herbert Melton; his sister-in-law, Nelda McDonald (Paul); his sister-in-law, Tommie Stegall (Walter); and his brother-in-law Jackie Melton (Nancy). Butch is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.

In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by his son, Brian Gene Cox; his sister, Barbara C. Baucom; his brother-in-law, Rev. Elwin Melton, his sister-in-law, Judy Helms (Chester Roscoe "CR").
