Charles (Charlie) A. Clayton, 88, of Greensboro, GA, passed away on October 2, 2023, in Monroe, NC,
due to complications after suffering a major stroke. He was at peace and surrounded by his loving
family. He will be remembered as a loving, patient and kind husband, father, uncle and grandfather.
Born July 30, 1935, in Greensboro, GA, he was the son of the late Alvin Edward Clayton and Ellie Mae
(Nell) Phelps Finch. Charlie graduated from Union Point High School in Union Point, GA, in 1953. He was
a veteran of the United States Navy and later worked as a Manufacturer Sales Representative.
During his career, Charlie traveled extensively by car for his work but always managed to be home every
night to be with his beloved wife Ellen. They married on February 14, 1971, and Charlie doted on Ellen
for 52 years, loving her more than life. He and Ellen enjoyed traveling the world during their career
together.
Later in life, he loved spending time in Colorado with his daughter, Chaelle, and her husband, Dave, and
his grandsons Eli and Hank, and his beloved grand dog, Oscar. Charlie and Ellen would spend at least ten
weeks a year in Colorado enjoying all four seasons.
College football season was special for Charlie, who spent lots of time with his family watching football
games. He was a diehard Georgia Bulldog fan until the end, watching his last Georgia football game with
his daughter on September 30, 2023.
Earlier this year, Charlie and his wife Ellen, relocated to Waxhaw, NC, to be closer to family and enjoy
time with his son, Johnny, and daughter-in-law, Lorraine. Charlie appreciated the beauty of their
property and their many animals who he proudly called his “grand animals.”
Charlie had a gentle demeanor and was the most patient, tender, kind, loving, and caring person anyone
could be lucky enough to have in one’s life. He would cherish and keep many, many lifelong friendships.
Charlie had a subtle sense of humor, an easy smile and was always quick to laugh. Everyone remembers his chuckle.
He was also the first to lend a helping hand. He will be dearly missed by everyone that knows him.
He was truly one of a kind and was one of the kindest souls a person could know.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen Byrd Clayton. Other survivors include his daughter, Chaelle
Clayton Ince (Dave) of Steamboat Springs, CO, son Chuck Clayton (Jennifer) of Woodstock, GA, and
Johnny Eason (Lorraine) of Waxhaw, NC, and four grandsons Chase, Chandler (Clayton), Eli, Hank (Ince).
He was preceded in death by his sister Patricia Ann Abraham (Abe).
Donations in Charlie’s name can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital.
