Ms. Dorothy Cureton, the daughter of the late Elliott and Kathleen Hood Cureton, was born November 1, 1943 in Union County. She received her crown from our heavenly father on December 26, 2021 at her nieces home in Monroe, NC. Ms. Cureton is the 5th of 8 children.
Funeral Services will be 2pm Thursday in the Chapel of Davis Service. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.
Ms. Cureton was raised by religious parents and at the age of 5 she was a member of the Little Angels Choir at Union Springs AME Zion Church. Ms. Cureton has been affiliated to a church her entire life and was a member at The First Freedom Baptist Church in Jamaica, New York for over 40 years. There, Ms. Cureton held several offices and served on many committees which included Vice President of Women’s Auxiliary, secretary and treasurer of the Floral Club. Ms. Cureton joined New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, GA after relocating to Loganville, GA.
Ms. Dorothy started elementary school at the age of five where she developed friendly relationships with the other children after only one week and graduated high school at the age of sixteen from East Union School. The day after graduation, Ms. Cureton moved to Long Island, New York and enrolled in barbering school. Ms. Cureton graduated in 1970 with an Associates Degree from Kingsboro Community College, in 1974 she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Resources from Old Westbury College and in 1978 she received a Master Degree in Social Work from Adelphi University.
Ms. Cureton began her career as a day worker caring for the needs of others as her life reflects. Ms. Cureton than began working as a dietary aide. Ms. Cureton worked in this position for 5 years. Seeking more knowledge and a different trade and after obtaining her barbering license, Ms. Cureton cut hair for 18 years. In 1967, Ms. Cureton began the longest adventure of her life working for Creedmoor Psychiatric Center where she was hired as a Therapy Aide. Ms. Cureton worked at the center for 43 years until she retired. Ms. Cureton received several awards for Excellence, Profession Accolades and Great Evaluations.
Ms. Cureton enjoyed shopping, socializing with friends at home, movies, music, television (QVC and HSN), eating out and all sports activities.
Ms. Cureton is preceded in death by her brothers: DeVaughn Cureton, Billy Frank Cureton, Alfonzo Cureton; sisters: Helen Chisolm, Nettie Lutricia Cureton, Mary Crowder, Maxine Morrow and Nephew: Arnold Morrow.
She leaves to cherish fond memories her nephews: Leonard Cureton, Ryan Cureton (Rhonda) of Monroe, NC; Johnathan Crowder (Jeannie) of Pageland, SC; Tony Cureton, Marcus Cureton of Charlotte, NC; Nieces: Sharon Morrow of Wingate, NC; Karon Morrow-Bolder (Jay Will) and Renee Bryant-Hood (Bobby Hood) of Monroe, NC and Remena Anderson (Shaun) of Lancaster, SC. step-daughter: Margaret Kennedy and god-daughter Trina Garrett; god-son: Amarii Peyton and a host of great nieces and nephews, family, extended family and friends.
