Dorothy Starnes Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy Gay Starnes, 97, of Monroe, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 30, 2021 at Atrium Health Union.

Dorothy's family will receive friends between 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM on Friday, August 6, 2021, at Davis Funeral Service, 1003 E. Franklin St., Monroe, NC, 28112.

A graveside service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, August 7, 2021, at Lakeland Memorial Park, 1901 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC, 28112, officiated by Rev. Hank Parker. Dressy casual attire is requested by the family for comfort of all who attend.

Dorothy was born June 14, 1924 to the late George Washington Starnes and Willie Mae Plyer Starnes of Monroe. Married on February 23, 1941 to Walter Lee Starnes Sr., the couple called Union County home and were active in their community. Mrs. Starnes and her husband were long time members and supporters of Turner Presbyterian Church, joining in 1967.  They loved the Lord and their church.  Both were Charter Members of STA (Starnes family members from all over the US).  They so loved the annual reunions catching up with distant family members and meeting new family members. Mrs. Starnes worked over 50 years at Herff Jones (formally Delmar) as a Yearbook Layout Artist.  She enjoyed her work tremendously and loved the people she worked with who became lifetime friends.  In her 80’s, she returned to working as a Hostess at the former Captain’s Galley Restaurant in Waxhaw.  That may possibly have been her favorite job of all.  She loved meeting and talking to new people and telling them what dishes they should try. Mrs. Starnes had a love of flowers, vegetable gardening, canning and freezing fresh foods.  She was a quilt maker and also County Fair Blue Ribbon winner for many years for her delicious cakes and also known for her fantastic Pecan Pies.  She loved to cook for family and friends and it was not unusual for her to feed dozens on a regular basis. She will be greatly missed by her beloved family.

Mrs. Starnes is survived by her children Evelyn (James) Howell, Lee Starnes all of Monroe and Brenda (Gary) Westcoat of Pennsylvania.  Also, her grandchildren Butch (Bonnie Griffin), Jeff and Donald (Everil) Howell, all of Monroe area, Dawn Marie (Tim) Westcoat Katz, of PA, Tyler (Brittany) Starnes, Chelsea Starnes, Eric and Cameron Tarlton all of Monroe.  Great grandchildren Julie (Scotty) McCain, Wyatt (Alyssa) Howell, Sydney Howell and Brylee Starnes.  Great Great-grandchildren Bailey Howell, Chloe McCain and Sean McCain.

In addition to her parents, and her husband Walter, Dorothy was preceded in death by her siblings Bernice McGuirt, Henry Starnes and Patsy Starnes, and great-grandson Thomas Howell.

In lieu of flowers, Dorothy's family requests that donations are made in her honor to your favorite charity or your church.
