Judge Starnes Obituary

Judge Benson Starnes Jr., 83, of Monroe passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 in his home surrounded by his loving family.  His funeral service will be 11 AM Saturday, May 7, 2022 in the Davis Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Charles Hines officiating.  Burial will follow in Prospect Methodist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Davis Funeral Service on Monroe on Friday evening from 6 until 8 PM.

Born November 8, 1938 in Union County, NC, he was the son of the late Judge Benson Starnes Sr. and Cleona Burgess Starnes.  He was retired as a supervisor with Springs Industries and was a life-long member of Prospect Methodist Church.  Mr. Starnes was dedicated to his church and was always willing to do whatever was necessary.  He was also a Veteran of the US Army Reserves.  He loved motorcycles and with his wife rode in 48 states and he was also a farmer for many years.  Mr. Starnes was known for his smile, and never met a stranger.  He made friends with almost everyone he met.

Mr. Starnes is survived by his wife Dianne Craig Starnes of the home.  Other survivors include daughters Robin Covington (Mark) of Greensboro, and Michelle Sullivan (Jack) of Monroe, and son Michael Starnes (Christina) of Monroe, a brother Tommy Starnes (Cathy) of Monroe, sisters Elsie Kindley (R. A.) of Monroe, and Betty Griffin (David) of Marshville, 6 grandchildren Benson Covington, Sam Covington, Abigail Starnes, Gabe Hough, Mason Starnes, and Erin Sullivan, 1 great-granddaughter Ava Kitchen. 

A sister, Faye Hinson, preceded him in death. 

The family wishes to express thanks to their church family, their motorcycle friends and the community for their love and support during the last months. 

The family requests that memorials be made to Prospect Southern Methodist Church, 6020 Prospect Rd., Monroe, NC 28112.
