Mr. Roy "Smitty" Melvin Smith, age 83, of Monroe, NC, passed away Friday, March 26, 2021 at Novant Health Matthews.
Roy was born February 9, 1938, in Mecklenburg County, NC, a son of the late Arthur Floyd Smith and Virginia Wilson Smith. A man of many talents, Roy enjoyed his work as a small engine mechanic. Roy especially enjoyed working on lawnmowers, and if given a wrench and a hammer he'd work on them all day. Also a highly skilled glass blower, he possessed the knowledge to get things done the right way. Roy always had a willingness to help, and even in his later years he'd offer advice on the best way to get the job done. A jokester who loved having fun while remaining true to himself, Roy was the life of the party who never met a stranger. Everyone who had a conversation with him felt as if they knew him their entire life, as his warm and welcoming presence was felt by all who met him. Married to his wife Linda for 62 years, Roy loved his family dearly. He also loved his animals, fishing, and traveling to the mountains, especially Linville Gorge. A man who enjoyed life and the people around him, Roy will be greatly missed and never forgotten by those who loved him.
Roy is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Smith, his sons; Ken Smith (Annette), Tim Smith (Blair), Michael Smith (Shawne), his brothers; Larry Smith and Eddie Smith, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Alan, his sister, Jane, his brother, Jimmy, his sister, Doris, his brother, Keith, and his brother, Glen.
