Steve was born May 17, 1952, in Roanoke Rapids, NC, a son of the late David Leo Mahaffey and Jeanette Beale Mahaffey Williams. Throughout his life, Steve worked in the transportation industry as a truck driver. Although a hard worker, Steve was a kid at heart. He had a smile and sense of humor that brought happiness to everyone around him. A skilled carpenter, he enjoyed woodworking and had a reputation for being able to fix anything that required a nail. When not at work or helping others, Steve could be found in his man cave watching the Washington Redskins or enjoying the outdoors. Whether fishing or boating on the lake, golfing, or camping with family, Steve knew how to have a great time and share it with others. A proud husband, father, and grandfather, Steve loved his family and friends deeply and uniquely. A man with a giving heart who would do anything for anyone, Steve will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by all that knew him.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Joan Mahaffey of Waxhaw, NC, five children; Travis Mahaffey (Robin) of Stokesdale, NC, Angel Rehl (Bill) of Powell's Point, NC, Barbara Mahaffey (Holly) of Lancaster, SC, Stephen Mahaffey (Joy) of Waxhaw, NC, Jennifer Ryberg (Dexter) of Lancaster, SC, a sister, Brenda Mahaffey Livesay (Jay) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, six grandchildren; Aidan Mahaffey, Makenzie Rehl, Elliott Mahaffey, Shelby Ryberg, Kinsleigh Foster, and Scarlett Foster.
