Steve was born August 2, 1940, in Frame, WV, a son of the late Clifton Owens Shafer and Katherine Mae Anderson Shafer. Steve's father was a coal miner, and he was raised around the coal mining camps of West Virginia. The work ethic Steve witnessed from an early age made a lifelong impression on him. Working as a forklift operator for Charlotte Pipe & Foundry Co., Steve retired after 32 years of service in which he never missed a day. Dedication was a consistent theme of Steve's character. A faithful husband throughout 52 years of marriage, Steve expressed love through his actions. A simple man who never owned a cell phone, Steve communicated through his presence that he was dependable to all who loved and needed him. Even dedicating his time to build the sanctuary of Hillcrest Baptist Church, Steve was a constant contributor. Always a committed provider, Steve wasn't one for hobbies of his own, but enjoyed activities that included spending time with the ones he loved. Whether he was teaching his children how to roller skate, bowl, or fishing with his sons, family was his priority. Remembered for his enduring patience and steadfast commitment, Steve will be lovingly remembered as a man of family and faith who will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Left to cherish Steve's memory is his wife, Cheryl Boulware Shaffer, his sons; Kevin Shaffer, Jeff Shaffer (Angie), his daughter, Candice Austin (Brian), his brother, Jack Shafer, his sister, Sheila Brown (Cecil), his brother, Jerry Shafer (Betty), his brother, Johnny Shafer (Jan), and his sister, Marilyn Jennings. Survivors also include 8 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death and reunited in eternal life with his daughter, Dawn Michelle Hinson, and his sisters Edna Mae Koch and Janet Kennimer.
