Sylvia (Jaynes) Secrest

Sylvia Jaynes Secrest, 94, of Monroe passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2023 in her home.  Her funeral service will be 2 PM on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Shiloh Baptist Church with Pastor Ron Hanna officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:15 until 1:45 PM prior to the hour of the service. 

Born August 7, 1929 in McDowell County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Clayton Jaynes and Vera Ledbetter Jaynes.  She graduated from Warren Wilson College, Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  She was a Home Economics and Earth Science Teacher throughout her career.  She loved to cater and had a catering business for many years.  She was a talented cake maker and made many cakes and loved to entertain during her life.  She loved to craft and garden and was very community minded, being a longtime volunteer with the American Red Cross.

Mrs. Secrest is survived by her husband of 69 years, Claude Secrest, of the home.  Other survivors include daughter Jan Secrest of Phoenix, and sister Joanne Helms and husband Frank of Knoxville, TN.
